Not yet. Character.AI is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is being sold. If no buyer agrees to keep the platform running, the company says it will be wound down. The sale is expected to finish in late November or early December 2026.

For now, nothing. The app works, chats are still there and subscriptions are still billed. Character.AI says your data stays covered by its privacy policy.
After the sale, it depends on the buyer. If someone buys the platform, your account will probably move with it. If nobody does, the platform will be wound down, and the company hasn't said what happens to stored chats then. Don't count on them staying accessible.
Not the app. Disney's opening bid is $20 million for a non-exclusive license to some of Character.AI's technology, plus help running the platform during the sale. It doesn't include users' chats or a commitment to keep the app running.
Character.AI says subscriptions stay active and it will notify subscribers in advance of changes to paid features. It hasn't announced refunds.
When the sale closes, expected in late November or early December 2026. We'll update this page.
