Backup for Character.AI is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that saves your own Character.AI chats and characters to files on your computer. This policy explains what it does with your data. Short version: nothing leaves your browser.

What the extension accesses

When you open a chat on character.ai, the extension looks up that character's name and picture so it can show them in its panel. When you click a backup button, it reads the following from Character.AI, using the session you're already signed in with:

• your chat list and the messages in your chats, including swipes;
• details of the characters you chose to back up (name, tagline, greeting, and the definition when Character.AI makes it available to you);
• your personas;
• the character's profile picture, from Character.AI's image server, when you download the character card.

All of this happens only on character.ai, and the data goes only into the file you download.

What happens to it

The extension turns that data into files (.json, .txt, or a .png character card) and your browser downloads them to your computer. That's all.

• We do not collect, receive, store, sell or share any of your data. We run no servers for this extension.
• The extension never reads or stores your password, cookies or access tokens.
• There are no analytics, tracking, ads or third-party scripts.
• Only the character's profile picture is saved. Images inside chats are not.

Your files

Backup files live on your computer, under your control. Delete them like any other file. Uninstalling the extension removes it completely; it keeps nothing behind.

Permissions

The extension runs only on https://character.ai/*, where it adds the backup panel and its Back up button. It requests no other browser permissions.

Children

The extension is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its date. A change that sends data anywhere would require a new extension version and a clear notice before it took effect.
